Apple's custom foldable Pencil is dead — iPhone Duo buyers wait months for stylus support
Apple's first foldable iPhone launches October 23 without a working stylus option — and the reason why matters if you're spending $1,999 on day one. The company built a compact Apple Pencil specifically for the iPhone Duo, designed to snap magnetically onto the hinge and charge wirelessly through it. Engineering problems killed it before mass production started, leaving buyers with a slower backup plan.
The hinge problem
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman broke the story in his Power On newsletter: Apple's custom compact Pencil couldn't make it through final engineering. The precise failure point isn't confirmed — it may have been the stylus hardware itself, the wireless charging system embedded in the hinge, or the interaction between the two. Either way, Apple wasn't prepared to delay the phone over it.
The fallback is the existing Apple Pencil (USB-C) — the standard $79 stylus already sold for iPad. The catch, confirmed by 9to5Mac, is that the Duo wasn't built with this stylus in mind from the start. Apple's engineers need additional software development and a full internal testing cycle before the feature ships. That means no Pencil support when the phone goes on sale October 23 — the update arrives "later in 2026," with November or December the likely window based on iOS beta reports.
What this means at launch
Preorders open October 16 in the US and UK, per MacRumors, with the phone reaching 70-plus countries on October 23. US pricing starts at $1,999 for 256GB. For context, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at $1,699 — $300 less — and arrives with full stylus support at launch.
The Duo already makes other trade-offs compared to Apple's flagship lineup: no Face ID, no telephoto lens. The delayed Pencil support adds a third item to that list, at least temporarily. Apple has a documented pattern of shipping features post-launch — Siri AI, for example, is still unavailable to EU customers due to Digital Markets Act rules — so "later in 2026" is plausible, but not guaranteed.
The bigger picture
The custom compact Pencil isn't necessarily gone for good. The iPhone Duo is Apple's first generation foldable, and the hinge-charging concept is almost certainly on the roadmap for a future model once engineers solve the interference issue. For now, if stylus input is your primary reason to buy, it's worth waiting until the software update actually ships before committing $1,999.
