Microsoft refreshes Surface Pro and Laptop with Snapdragon X2 Plus — and a big price hike
Microsoft's updated Surface lineup lands on October 13 with a chip upgrade and a price tag that will make budget shoppers flinch. The Surface Pro 12" Second Edition starts at $1,149 and the Surface Laptop 13" Second Edition at $1,199 — a $300 jump from the 2025 base prices of $799 and $899. Both devices run on Qualcomm's new six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus, putting them in direct competition with the MacBook Air rather than the budget Windows laptops they once targeted.
The chip upgrade
The Snapdragon X2 Plus brings three concrete gains over the outgoing processor: graphics performance up more than 60%, local AI task processing up to 95% faster, and battery efficiency improved by 18%. In real-world terms that means the Surface Pro gains roughly one extra hour of battery life (up to 13 hours of web use) and the Surface Laptop gains two extra hours. The neural processing unit delivers 80 TOPS, which covers Microsoft's current Copilot+ feature set. As Thurrott notes, the chip swap is otherwise the whole story — almost nothing else changes.

What stayed the same — and what didn't
The Surface Pro keeps its 12-inch LCD at 2196×1464 and up to 90 Hz. The Laptop keeps its 13-inch panel at 1920×1280 and 60 Hz. Both screens now peak at 500 nits, up from 400 — a 25% brightness boost. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 are standard on both. Ports are unchanged: two USB-C 3.2 on the Pro, and the Laptop adds a USB-A 3.2 port and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The bigger structural change is RAM. Microsoft has dropped the 8GB option entirely; 16GB is now the floor, with 24GB above that. That's the main reason the entry price climbed so sharply — as 9to5Google confirms, the price delta on a like-for-like 16GB/256GB config is around $100, not $300. Both devices also return in black alongside the usual colorways.
The price reality
At $1,149, the Surface Pro 12" Second Edition sits well above ASUS and Lenovo's competing Snapdragon X devices, which undercut it by $200 or more.
