Qualcomm's Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 doubles AI power and adds Wi-Fi to earbuds
Qualcomm's new audio chip could change what wireless earbuds are capable of — but you won't be buying any that use it anytime soon. At its Snapdragon Summit in Maui on September 23, 2026, Qualcomm unveiled Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2, a platform that doubles AI processing power over its predecessor and embeds Wi-Fi 6E directly into the chip. Partner products from Bose, HP, and Cleer are expected no earlier than Q1–Q2 2027.
The chip
The headline number is 128 GOPS (giga-operations per second) of AI performance — double the 64 GOPS in the Snapdragon S7 Gen 1, per the Qualcomm official announcement. MAC operations per cycle also double, from 128 to 256. That headroom is meant to enable real-time translation and context-aware audio processing running entirely on the earbud itself, with no phone required.
Despite the performance jump, Qualcomm says the platform is 30% smaller and uses 40% less power than the previous generation. Fifth-generation adaptive ANC, aptX Lossless, and cVc echo-suppression round out the feature set. A new angle: the platform explicitly supports camera-equipped earbuds, pointing toward a class of wearables that can interpret their surroundings visually. Qualcomm announced the chip alongside its Red Magic 12 Pro+ locks in Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and 0.96mm bezels, signalling a broader AI-everywhere push across its product range.

The Wi-Fi angle
The more disruptive addition is micro-power Wi-Fi 6E, integrated directly into the audio chip. Using Qualcomm's XPAN technology, earbuds can stream lossless audio at 24-bit/192kHz — far beyond what Bluetooth can carry — and connect to AI cloud services without routing through a smartphone. GSMArena's tech breakdown notes idle consumption sits around 3–4mA, keeping battery drain manageable.
That direct-to-cloud design is worth noting from a privacy standpoint. Earbuds that bypass the phone to reach the internet independently represent a new data pathway — one that UK regulators and the ICO may scrutinize as the technology reaches consumers.

XPAN technology enables lossless 24-bit/192kHz audio over Wi-Fi 6E, bypassing Bluetooth entirely.
What's actually available
Nothing yet. Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 is a reference platform — OEMs get the design specs, then build products around them. The named partners (Bose, HP, Cleer) are concept collaborators, not confirmed retail launches. Apple's H2 chip, already shipping in AirPods Pro and updated in 2026, remains the benchmark for adaptive audio in the premium segment. Samsung Galaxy Buds, OnePlus, and other Android-ecosystem earbuds are the natural targets for Elite Gen 2 devices when they do arrive.
If you're shopping for premium earbuds now, nothing here changes your options. Check back in early 2027.
