Gothic Classic lands on iPhone and iPad — full RPG, no in-app purchases
The 2001 German RPG Gothic is now on iOS — with no free-to-play tricks, no in-app purchases, and the full game. THQ Nordic released Gothic Classic on the App Store on September 24, 2026, priced at $10.99. That puts it at less than a third of the console version's $29.99 price tag, per RPG Site.
The game
Gothic was developed by Piranha Bytes, a studio based in Essen, Germany, and released in 2001. It helped define the open-world RPG genre in Europe — its influence can be traced through The Witcher and Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Piranha Bytes was acquired by Embracer Group in 2019 and closed in June 2024, making THQ Nordic the current steward of the franchise.
The iOS version preserves the full 50+ hour experience. THQ Nordic adapted the interface — larger, rounder UI elements — for touchscreens, and added support for physical gamepads. iPad users can also connect a keyboard and mouse. A first-person camera option is new to this version. Cloud saves and Game Center integration are included. Nothing has been cut from the original game's content or atmosphere.
The catch
This is an iOS-exclusive launch. Android users — roughly 45% of the US smartphone market — have no version available, and THQ Nordic has not announced one, according to Games Press. No explanation for the platform strategy has been given.
The port also arrives alongside a full remake. Gothic 1 Remake, built in Unreal Engine 5, Gothic 1 Remake sells 500,000 copies in its first week after launching in June 2026 — and a major patch has since made it harder, not easier, for new players. The Classic iOS port is a separate product, aimed squarely at players who want the original without modifications.
Availability
Gothic Classic requires iOS 17.6 or later and runs on iPhone XS (2018) and newer, plus supported iPad models. The download is 3.9 GB. It is available now on the App Store for $10.99. Gothic also hit consoles for the first time in July 2026, at $29.99 — making the iOS price the cheapest entry point into the original game by a wide margin.
