GTA VI gets an M rating, and sex scenes are listed in some stores
GTA VI now has an age rating, and it is the strictest one a mainstream game normally gets. The US ratings board, the ESRB, has given it M (17+), and Europe's PEGI system says 18. With the game due on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, parents, politicians and anyone who wants to buy it will have the same question: how explicit is it?
The rating
The ESRB descriptors, listed by GoSuGamers, cover blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and drugs and alcohol. The rating appeared in PlayStation Store listings. The ESRB's own database entry was still pending at the time of writing.
Store wording varies by region. Australian and New Zealand listings spell out "sex scenes", according to gHacks. US, UK and EU listings use the vaguer "strong sexual content".
None of this is a surprise. GTA V carried the same ratings. What isn't known is how the sexual content works. Rockstar hasn't said whether it is interactive or limited to cutscenes.
The Hot Coffee shadow
Rockstar has been here before. In 2005, a hidden sex minigame was found in the code of GTA: San Andreas. The ESRB changed the game's rating to Adults Only, some retailers pulled it, and lawsuits followed. Nothing like that is happening now, because the content is disclosed up front. It still explains why critics are watching.
A newer risk is financial. Campaigns pressuring payment processors over adult games have named GTA among at-risk titles, reports ThatParkPlace. No processor has said it will refuse GTA VI sales, and no ruling exists.
What buyers should expect
Expect the game to be sold as normal. Digital stores will enforce the age gate, and physical copies will carry the 17+ or 18 label. Retailers can refuse to sell to younger buyers, but that is a matter of store policy, not law, in most places.
Rockstar has so far shown the game in small doses. Our GTA VI preview covers the bigger map and weather, and the Game Informer cover story added 12 screenshots. Neither shows the content that earned the rating.
No UK, German or French regulator has made a pre-release challenge. That's a contrast with 2004 and 2005, but there are still six weeks before launch.
