Metro 2033 Redux and Last Light Redux get free 4K upgrades in October
If you own Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux, both games are about to look and run better for nothing. Developer 4A Games will release free next-gen updates on October 22 for PC and October 29 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Anyone who bought the games on PC, PS4 or Xbox One qualifies. The timing is deliberate: it gives you a way to catch up before Metro 2039 launches in February.
The upgrade
This is not a remaster. 4A says it kept the original look and feel of the Redux versions and added targeted improvements for modern hardware. The list includes 4K textures, better animation, sharper audio and improved lighting, plus bug fixes and smaller quality-of-life tweaks.
On consoles, GamingBolt reports a target of native 4K at 60fps, or upscaled 4K at up to 120fps. Upscaling means the game renders at a lower resolution and uses software to sharpen the image. PC players get DLSS (Nvidia's upscaler), while PS5 uses PSSR and Xbox and PC can use TSR. PS5 owners also get DualSense adaptive triggers, which add resistance to the trigger buttons.
"This is not a full remaster or remake," the studio said in its Deep Silver announcement, calling the update a thank-you to players.
The milestone
The same announcement said the Metro series has passed 50 million copies sold worldwide. The first game came out 16 years ago. The last mainline entry, Metro Exodus, launched in February 2019, so the series has been quiet for a long stretch.
Before Metro 2039
Metro 2039 arrives on February 4, 2027, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. The game's Metro 2039 gets a release date and PS5 Pro gameplay at State of Play were shown at State of Play in September, and early hands-on impressions have been strongly positive.
If you don't own the Redux games yet, they are the cheapest way into the story. Both sell on Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store and Xbox, and they regularly drop in price. Steam's August Ukrainian games sale cut Metro titles by up to 90%. Buy now and you should get the new version without paying again.
No file sizes have been announced. The patches should install automatically through your platform's usual update system once they go live.
