Sony brings AI upscaling to the standard PS5 with QSSR
If you own a regular PS5, your games can now look sharper without a hardware upgrade. Sony launched QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) on October 1. It's an AI upscaler, meaning software that renders a game at a lower resolution and then rebuilds a cleaner, higher-resolution image. Until now, only the PS5 Pro had that. Two games support QSSR today: Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei.
The tech
QSSR is a slimmed-down version of PSSR, the upscaler Sony built for the PS5 Pro two years ago. Sony developed it with AMD under Project Amethyst, and the PlayStation Blog describes two changes: a leaner neural network and hand-tuning for the base console.
The base PS5 lacks the dedicated machine-learning hardware that the Pro has, so it can't run the full PSSR model. Sony says PSSR stays the "gold standard" for the Pro. QSSR is the cheaper version for everyone else.
The cost
Sharper images aren't free. Heise measured about 4.4 milliseconds of processing time per frame at 4K. In Marvel's Wolverine, upscaling from 864p to 1440p costs roughly 8–10 frames per second with the frame rate uncapped.
Early Digital Foundry testing shows cleaner, more detailed pictures in return. In performance mode, which favours smooth motion over sharpness, that trade looks acceptable.
Who gets it
Every PS5 owner can use it, but only through patched games. Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei both received updates on launch day. Sony says the QSSR library will be available to all developers, though it hasn't named other games or given a timetable.
That gap matters. A PS5 Pro costs considerably more than the standard model, and QSSR narrows the visual difference for players who won't pay for it. How far it narrows depends on whether third-party studios adopt it.
Sony hasn't announced separate pricing or regional restrictions. The upscaler arrives through game patches, so there is nothing extra to buy. Players who like free visual upgrades can also look at the free 4K upgrades coming to the Metro Redux games this month.
For now, check whether your game has a QSSR patch before expecting changes. If you play Wolverine or Ghost of Yōtei, try both performance and quality modes and see which trade you prefer.
